Communicative Visualizations as a Learning Problem

چکیده

Significant research has provided robust task and evaluation languages for the analysis of exploratory visualizations. Unfortunately, these taxonomies fail when applied to communicative Instead, designers often resort evaluating visualizations from cognitive efficiency perspective: “can recipient accurately decode my message/insight?” However, are unlikely be satisfied if message went `in one ear out other.' The consequence this inconsistency is that it difficult design or select between competing options in a principled way. problem we address fundamental mismatch how want describe their intent, language they have. Modeling Word Learning As Communicative Inference

How do children learn their first words? I describe a model that makes joint inferences about what speakers are trying to talk about and the meanings of the words they use. This model provides a principled framework for integrating a wide variety of non-linguistic information sources into the process of word learning.

Plexlines: Tracking Socio-communicative Behaviors Using Timeline Visualizations

In this paper, we visualize children's coordinated gaze, gesture, and vocalization to better understand communicative behaviors and to identify developmental delay, specifically in the domain of Autism Spectrum Disorders. To date, existing behavioral data from clinical assessment instruments are often stored in raw text files or spreadsheets. This wealth of data is then represented as a single ...

Developing communicative competencies for a learning organization

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the developmental needs of managers operating in continuous change contexts. Special attention is drawn to communicative competences through the use of Kent and Taylor’s (2002) five principles of dialogic communication. A case study is used to illustrate the communicative challenges in creating a learning organization. Methodology: The rese...

Learning Electromagnetism with Visualizations and Active Learning

This chapter describes learning electromagnetism with visualizations and focuses on the value of concrete and visual representations in teaching abstract concepts. We start with a theoretical background consisting of three subsections: visualization in science, simulations and microcomputer-based laboratory, and studies that investigated the effectiveness of simulations and real-time graphing i...

A communicative approach to early word learning

Young children learn the meanings of thousands of words by the time they can run down the street. Many efforts to explain this rapid development begin by assuming that the computational-level problem being solved is acquisition. Consequently, work in this line has sought to understand how children infer the meanings of words from cues in the communicative signals of the speakers around them. I ...
